Melissa Mahone, Vice President of Mahone's Wallpaper Shop was asked to speak to member's of local IDS chapter. Within this meeting she shared what it is like to own a business and to balance work with family. She also shared information on current trends and what is new to the wallpaper industry...

Grandma's house + wallpaper = false thought

Personally, as an Interior Design student I was never drawn to wallpaper. When I began working at Mahone's Wallpaper Shop in Lynchburg, VA my attitude changed greatly. I began to realize that the spaces in which I enjoyed the most - whether on vacations, flipping through design magazines or visiting homes, they did surprisingly have wallpaper. Think of the structure of a home as being the bones, the walls are like the flesh (whether painted, specially treated, etc.). Now think of when we get that heavenly tan glow in the summer time, it changes the look of the person almost as if reviving them. The clothes (or in this case the furniture and accessories) added to the room enhance the entire feel. Wallpaper is the sunset in a beach scene... without it, you only have the water and shore. With it you have a brilliant masterpiece. Paint is a great feature too but with the wide variety in wallpaper today at different price ranges, who wouldn't go with it? I hear a lot of people thinking as I once did; "wallpaper reminds me of my grandmother's house", "it is too hard to install", etc. Although, you can still get the awesome eclectic prints grandma used to have, wallpaper has definitely stepped it's game up since. Below are some of my personal favorites...
